Both the Shetland ladies’ hockey club and football team had a dream sporting Saturday with big inter-county wins away in Orkney.
Shetland’s hockey team claimed a nail-biting 2026 victory over Orkney at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall, earning the Lady Hamilton Cup. It was early in the county—in the first quarter, Rhea Nicolson’s strike in the dying moments of the quarter gave the Blues the lead. Shetland then played a game of discipline and determination to take a shot at a home record and prevail.
This continues Shetland’s impressive string of results in inter-county hockey. The team has now proved that it isn’t a fluke to pull off a win in Orkney back in 2024. Captain Rhiannon Inkster-Smith thanked everyone who had been involved in the background and praised the dedication of the coaches and players over the last few years.
The celebrations on Shetland didn’t end there. Another drama of the afternoon came when the footballers scored an exciting 4-3 win over Orkney to complete five consecutive Milne Cup victories.
It was a good start from Shetland with Jack Clubb at the head, and then Orkney retaliated via Toby MacLeod. The Blues soon got their shot through, and Greg Tulloch opened the scoring twice before half-time to give Shetland a 3-1 lead.
Orkney didn’t go down without a fight. George Ewing recovered one in the second half, but the debutant Reece Black responded with a big moment in his first inter-county appearance to make it a two-goal even. Ewing then knocked one home at the end of the range, making it 4-3 and getting the game into a tight finish, but Shetland didn’t falter.
Shetland was a forerunner on the day, coming out of Orkney with two big victories, trophies, and bragging rights!
