Australia’s former head of Test cricket Justin Langer has been left out of England’s shortlist for a new Test head coach, according to a report. The search for a new head coach for England’s Test cricket team has been given an unusual twist after reports allege that Justin Langer, former head coach of Australia, has been ruled out of the shortlist for the position.
Interviews for the open position have now started, but Langer is not thought to be one of those being shortlisted. Instead, Richard Dawson and Jonathan Trott have become the most prominent names in the running for England, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) considers appointing a new coach ahead of the Test series against Pakistan, which will begin on August 19.
Dawson could offer the quickest solution. The county’s success in guiding them to promotion last season has got them looking to release him as well as Glamorgan. He also brings great experience to the England system, as he has worked with the white-ball team and England Lions.
Trott, on the other hand, has improved his coaching credentials with the success that has come his way in Afghanistan. The former England batsman led Afghanistan to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup before he stepped down from the job earlier this year. He would have international experience, an understanding of English cricket, and be a strong contender.
The foreign alternatives are also quite intriguing. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been released after his stint with Chennai Super King in the Indian Premier League. But he’s in such good company with McCullum that it might prove to be a blessing and a bad omen if England wishes for a red-carpet change.
There are other possible international candidates, including experienced Australian coach Tom Moody.
England had previously come calling on Andy Flower, but he is said to have turned it down due to competition between Test and white-ball cricket and the fact that he already had an IPL deal.
If the recruitment process is to extend beyond the anticipated period, then Marcus Trescothick could be given a chance to coach the Pakistan series until they find a replacement.
Now it’s a game of Langer vs. Dawson, Trott, and Fleming. The England decision will have implications for the future of the Test team—and whether the McCullum era is continuity or a dramatic reset.
