Former Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has denied that there has been any controversy regarding Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal ahead of the big match between Argentina and Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament.
Much of the pre-match focus has been on the Argentina legend and the Spain teenager, but Kahn has insisted that the match shouldn’t be a duel between two superstars.
The German icon believes that Messi and Yamal are at “entirely different places” in their careers. Messi is at the end of a football journey that has been one of the sport’s greatest, while Yamal is just starting to carve his legacy.
For the Spanish winger, it was particularly significant, Kahn said, referring to the youngster’s upbringing, where he looked up to Messi and developed a similar career through Barcelona’s youth system. But he cautioned that it is “unnecessary to put pressure on the 19-year-old” by putting Yamal straight beside the Argentine superstar.
The former keeper admired Yamal’s maturity and his ability to perform under great demands. Nonetheless, he said there may be someone who could not see all the attacking talents of the youngster at the World Cup.
Kahn said that Yamal is more free to play in a club environment, and Spain needs him to play more disciplined, structured, and defensively. Those requirements, he thinks, will be beneficial for the winger to become a full-fledged player.
But Messi is still Argentina’s most dangerous threat when it comes to breaking through. The veteran forward would be an extra presence of an extraordinary kind, Kahn said, adding that defenders and goalkeepers are at ease when he is away from danger.
The German legend also extolled Luis de la Fuente’s Spain tactics with the assertion that the European side has grown beyond its previous reputation of being possession-based. Now Spain plays more directly; they play the ball more quickly and play more aggressively in the wide areas.
Kahn is convinced that the signing of a known striker has also brought balance and purpose to the Spaniards’ final third.
But he cautioned this was a World Cup mentality that could make all the difference in Argentina. The defending champions have confidence and character and can put in key moments when it matters.
But the Argentina vs. Spain World Cup final is no ordinary game, as Messi continues on his quest for a record-breaking World Cup and Yamal is trying to make his name on the biggest stage in football.
